Hebrews 1:7

9 February 2010

Last week I read a blog post from the Better Bibles Blog discussing the proper translation of Hebrews 1:7 and the Old Testament passage it quotes, Psalm 104:4. The article itself goes into some depth, but the main thrust of it was this: most translations translate Hebrews 1:7 inaccurately. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament passages should read something like ‘appointing the winds his messengers and flames of fire his servants’.

The blog author says that the only translation to get it right is the New Jerusalem Bible. (My Esperanto Bible also translates the passage this way!)

Why this is interesting to me is that last Saturday I was reading according to my regular plan. My passage from the Psalms for that day included Psalm 104, and my New Testament passage included Hebrews 1. That made me go back and read that post more carefully!
