Isn’t the iPad just an oversized iPod touch?

3 February 2010

Short answer: Pretty much. It’s just the ‘just’ I don’t agree with. The iPad is pretty much a big iPod touch—and that’s exactly what it should be.

After all, what prevents people from using the iPod touch as their everyday computing device? The major reason is the screen size.

Even if the only difference between the iPod touch and the iPad were that the latter is faster and has a larger screen, it would make all the difference:

  • Web-browsing with an iPod is frustrating.
Web-browsing with an iPad is fun.
  • Showing pictures with an iPod is awkward.
Showing pictures with an iPad is awesome.
  • I’m sure screen size makes all the difference
    when reading and writing email.
  • Reading ebooks on an iPod touch?
Well, you probably won’t be able to do it with the same selection of books
as you will be able to with the iPod,
and the screen size makes reading just that less enjoyable.
  • Planning on the calendar is annoying with the iPod’s small screen,
    but perfect with the iPad’s.
  • Google Maps is small and slow on the iPod,
but swift and stunning on the iPad.
  • Word-processing . . . ?
    Enough said.
  • Plus, the 3G option on the iPad is something
that can’t be had on the iPod touch.

I hope my affected alliteration wasn’t so tacky it obscured my point: a big iPod touch is a Good Thing.
